“He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.” — Psalm 23:2

Psalm 23 gives us more than a picture of calm. It shows us the care of a Shepherd who knows what His people need and faithfully leads them.

This Psalm 23:2 print pairs David’s words with Childe Hassam’s The Little Pond, Appledore. Still blue water rests between green banks and wildflowers beneath an open sky—a scene that feels almost painted for this verse.

Beautiful in a bedroom, hallway or prayer space, and a thoughtful gift for someone entering a season of rest, recovery or change.

Each print is made to order on museum-quality matte paper and is available in a range of sizes, unframed or with a ready-to-hang wood frame.

    The Story Behind The Print

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.” — Psalm 23:2

Psalm 23 is loved for its sense of peace, but it begins with something even more precious:

    The Lord is my shepherd.

David’s confidence was not that life would always feel calm. The same psalm that leads us beside quiet waters also takes us through the darkest valley. Its comfort is that the Shepherd remains present in both.

To be led by God means we are not left to find our own way or carry every need alone. He knows when we need rest, when our souls need restoring and which paths will lead us closer to Him. “I shall not want” does not promise that every desire will be fulfilled; it means that the Shepherd will not fail to give His people what they truly need.

I love that Hassam did not paint a dramatic ocean here. The Little Pond, Appledore feels sheltered and unhurried. Blue water rests between the green banks, wildflowers grow close to the shore, and the open sky gives the scene room to breathe.

For Christians, the Shepherd has a face. Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd—the One who does not care for His sheep from a distance, but lays down His life for them. Our deepest rest is not found in circumstances remaining peaceful, but in knowing that we belong to Him.

Beside quiet waters or through the valley, we are not walking alone.

    The Lord is our Shepherd.

And He knows how to restore our souls.
