Psalm 121 begins with a question many of us know well:
Where does my help come from?
The psalmist lifts his eyes towards the mountains, but his confidence is not in the mountains themselves. They may look strong and immovable, yet they too are created things.
His help comes from the One who made them.
That is the foundation of the whole psalm. Our security is not ultimately found in our own strength, careful planning or ability to control what happens next. It rests in the character of God—the Maker of heaven and earth who never grows tired, distracted or unaware of His people.
Again and again, Psalm 121 tells us that the Lord watches over you.
He does not slumber. He keeps our coming and going. His care is not occasional, and it does not depend upon our ability to keep ourselves secure.
That does not mean the Christian life is untouched by suffering. God’s keeping is deeper than a promise of comfortable circumstances. It means that no road we walk, no uncertainty we face and no season we enter can place us outside His sovereign care.
Paired with this Monet landscape, the words feel especially striking. The mountain rises above the foreground, beautiful and imposing, while everything beneath it seems small by comparison.
Sometimes the things ahead of us feel like that too.
Psalm 121 does not tell us simply to admire the mountain.
It teaches us to look beyond it.
