“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8
Ephesians 2 does not begin by telling us that we need to try harder or become better versions of ourselves.
It tells us that we were spiritually dead.
Then come two of the most hope-filled words in Scripture:
But God.
Because of His great love and mercy, God made us alive with Christ. We did not rescue ourselves, contribute the missing piece or make ourselves worthy of His welcome. Salvation begins with God, is accomplished by Christ and is given entirely by grace.
Faith is not another achievement to place before Him. It is the empty hand that receives what Jesus has already done.
That is why Paul is so clear: “this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Grace leaves no room for pride, but it also leaves no room for despair. Our hope does not rest on whether we have performed well enough, held everything together or managed to make ourselves deserving.
It rests on Christ.
The restrained green of this William Morris botanical gives the verse a quiet strength. Leaves, flowers and small fruits repeat across the design, while the words beneath remain simple and unmistakable: by grace you have been saved.
And grace does not leave us unchanged. In the verses that follow, Paul writes that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. We are not saved by our works, but we are saved into a new life in which God is already at work.

A beautiful print, with the words to ‘Be Still My Soul’ underneath. The print color is exactly what I saw on the website. It is on sturdy stock, and came in a timely manner. I will order more from this company!
