There is something deeply personal about the invitation to “taste and see.”
David is not asking us simply to accept that God is good because someone else has told us so. He is inviting us to draw near, take refuge in Him and discover His goodness for ourselves.
Psalm 34 was written from David’s own experience of fear, deliverance and dependence on God. These are not the words of someone untouched by trouble, but of someone who sought the Lord in the middle of it and found Him faithful.
That matters, because the goodness of God is not a promise that every season will feel good. It is the assurance that His character does not change when our circumstances do. He hears. He remains near. He is a refuge for those who come to Him.
Paired with William Morris’s fruit-filled botanical, the verse feels almost made for the artwork. Pomegranates, citrus fruit, curling leaves and small blossoms stretch across the blue ground, giving a visual richness to the words “taste and see.”
