Hebrews 11 begins by showing us what faith looks like when the promise of God is sure, but its fulfilment is not yet visible.
This is not a vague optimism that everything will work out as we would like. Biblical faith rests on something far firmer: the character of God. It believes that He is truthful, faithful and worthy of our trust, even when we cannot yet see what He is doing.
The rest of the chapter tells the stories of men and women who lived this way. They obeyed, waited and continued forward because God had spoken. Many did not receive everything they had been promised within their lifetime, yet they trusted that His word would not fail.
Paired with William Morris’s intricate floral design, the verse feels especially fitting. Stems, leaves and flowers weave together in a pattern larger than any single detail. Each element has its place, even when the full design cannot be understood from one small part.
