In ancient Israel, a fortified tower was a place of refuge and protection. Built high above the surrounding land, with strong stone walls and guarded entrances, allowing watchmen to see approaching enemies and providing a defensible position when enemies tried to attack.
For those facing danger, the tower represented protection. A place to run when they were vulnerable and exposed.
So when the writer of Proverbs declares that the name of the Lord is a fortified tower, it is a powerful picture of the security found in God.
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
The Hebrew word translated safe in Proverbs 18:10 is nisgav, carrying the meaning of being set on high, beyond the reach of danger.
A fortified tower did not mean that there was no battle outside its walls. It meant there was somewhere to run when the battle came.
And how much greater is our refuge in the Lord.
The same God who tells His people, “Do not fear, for I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10), is the God whose faithfulness we can trust. And Jesus promises His disciples, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
Our security is not found in our ability to control life’s events.
It is found in the Lord Himself.
The One who has overcome the world. The One who will never leave His people. The One whose promises extend beyond the troubles of this present life into eternity.
Whatever lies ahead, may we remember where our true refuge is found.
